Colin Kloot (Principal)

Colin was born in Namibia and schooled in the Republic of South Africa where he graduated from Rhodes University in 1980. Colin practiced law in the city of East London on the south eastern seaboard of South Africa until he and his family emigrated to Drumheller in 1999.


Colin joined the firm on the 1st of September, 1999, and has been a partner since 2002.


Colin represents the Town of Drumheller, various corporate and personal clients in all aspects of civil and criminal law.


Colin served as Chair on the Board of Directors of Legal Aid Alberta and is also involved in various community projects and associations such as Dinosaur Half Marathon, Ducks Unlimited, Past Vice-President of Titans Community Football Association, Legal Advisor to the local policy committee, Dinosaur Trail Golf Course, and Minor Hockey.


Colin, is married to Louise and they have a daughter Michelle and son Andrew.

Colin's interests are hunting, marathon running, and travelling.

William Anthony Herman (Consultant)

Bill grew up in East Coulee and after graduating from the University of Calgary in 1980, he joined Ross, Todd and Company and has been practicing law here ever since.


Bill has been very active in the community at all levels and has been Past-President of the Chamber of Commerce, on the Board of the Dinosaur Trail Golf Course, is presently the President of the Drumheller Curling Club, has been a Kinsman for many years, and involves himself in many other community associations.


Bill enjoys cycling, running, golf, and is a very proficient curler.


Bill has retired as a partner and is now a consultant with our firm. He has scaled back his hours beginning January 2020.

Michael S. B. James (Associate)

Michael was born in Edmonton and lived near Duffield, Alberta Beach, and Gibbons until his family eventually settled in Edmonton when he was a teenager. He attended the University of Alberta after high school and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Palaeontology in 2006. He received a Master of Science degree from the University of Alberta in 2010.


Michael moved to Drumheller in 2010 after completing his graduate studies. In 2016, he went back to the University of Alberta to study law and earned his Juris Doctor in 2019. During his time at the University, he volunteered for the Criminal Law Division of Student Legal Services of Edmonton and spent the summer of 2017 working for Student Legal Services, helping the low-income community with their legal matters.


Following law school, Michael returned to Drumheller and joined Herman, Kloot, & Company in 2019 as a Student-at-Law. He’s excited to come back to his adopted home of Drumheller and practice law.

Michael enjoys travelling, camping, hiking, games, movies, reading, and photography. He has also volunteered as an actor in several productions through Kaleidoscope Theatre, including Oklahoma!, Leader of the Pack, and The Game’s Afoot or Holmes for the Holidays.

Robert Douglas Ross, Q.C. (Retired)

Born in Drumheller in April 1936, Bob's father and grandfather were doctors and were founder members of Drumheller associated physicians.


Bob was a founding member of Ross, Todd and Company, and has practiced law with the firm in Drumheller since 1963 and received the designation of Queen's Counsel in 1982. Bob retired as a partner of the firm in 2007, and since then has been able to devote more time to travelling the world.


Throughout his years in Drumheller, Bob has been very active in the community and has served at the highest levels on many Boards, associations, and cultural groups.


Bob has 3 children, Douglas, Anne, and Alan. Bob enjoys travelling, golf, and spending time with his 6 grandchildren.

Sharon Jean Clark (Retired)

After graduating from the University of Calgary in 1985, Sharon began the practise of law in 1986 and joined Ross Todd & Company (now Herman, Kloot & Company) in 1988. Her practise since that time has been largely in the field of family law, Queen's Bench litigation, wills and estates. Sharon has involved herself in the community and is a serving member and a former Chairperson of the Municipal Planning Commission and has served as a Director of the Chamber of Commerce, Family and Community Support Services and the Drumheller and Region Transition Society. She has been a presenter of the Parenting After Separation course.


Sharon is married to Gordon and until recently they owned property in Scottsdale, Arizona which necessitated an annual trip 'south'. Sharon's decision to become an inactive member of the Law Society was partially due to the retirement of her husband, the need to care for her elderly mother and her wish to spend more time enjoying her acreage and gardens. She will continue to be an avid member of a local fitness centre.
